At the current rate, the total carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising rapidly, and the total emission of carbon dioxide this year will be around 40 billion tons. Leading environmental and climate scientists and the world leaders  at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have estimated a carbon budget, the amount of carbon dioxide that can be added to the atmosphere without triggering a dangerous level of climate change, and found out that more than half of the global allowance has already been used up.
