5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Solar Energy System

For quite some time now, people have been looking for ways to make their homes more sustainable. That’s why modern homeowners are constantly looking for new ways they can reduce their home’s carbon footprint and make their homes eco-friendlier. One of the best ways to start off on this journey is by switching to solar energy.

By installing a quality solar system, you’ll not only reduce the impact your household has on the environment. You’ll also drastically reduce your electricity costs. That being said, however, not every solar system is created equal and not all of them will bring you the same benefits. So, to get the most out of your solar energy system, check out some of these tips.

Position the panels right

Since the sun travels across the sky throughout the day, it can be a bit tricky to determine where you should place your solar panels. Ideally, they should be placed somewhere where they will receive the maximum amount of sunlight each day. That’s why you need to pay special attention to orientation and placement. If you live in the northern hemisphere, your solar panels should be positioned to place true south and vice versa. Additionally, your solar panels should be slightly tilted. Ideally, they should be tilted at an angle that is equal to the geographical latitude.

Include a charge controller

When solar panels are exposed to sun rays, they will produce energy. Of course, the more light your solar panels receive, the greater their power output will be. In order to be able to use that energy throughout the day, even when the sunlight is sparse or gone, you’ll need to install a solar battery as well. But before the energy reaches the battery it will need to go through a charge controller first. A charge controller is responsible for controlling the energy charge that enters the battery. Installing a charge controller is necessary if you want to ensure that your solar batteries are being charged properly and safely, without risking any potential accidents.

Use solar batteries to store energy

Next, as the current travels through the charge controller, it will reach your solar batteries. To make the most out of your batteries, you should always choose lithium-ion batteries. This material is super light in weight and it allows the current to pass through it easily. Additionally, these batteries are super easy to recharge. That’s why lithium-ion batteries are considered to be the best possible alternative that can currently be found on the market.

Invest in a quality inverter

The current that’s produced by solar panels and stored into batteries is direct current or DC. This type of current travels in a singular direction unlike the alternating current, or AC for short. This is important to note since the majority of household appliances need AC in order to be able to function properly. What this means is that unless you find a way to convert DC into AC, you won’t have much use of your solar energy system. Here’s where a quality solar inverter plays an important role. As the current travels through the solar battery it will enter the inverter before it’s further distributed throughout your home. The inverter will invert DC into AC, enabling you to power your household. So, make sure you choose a high-quality inverter to ensure that everything will work as it’s supposed to.

Connect your system to the grid

In the end, if you want to truly maximize the use of your solar panel system, you should connect it to your local grid. By doing so, you can feed the power your system manages to produce directly to your local electricity grid and draw the energy from the grid to power your household. This is an excellent way to ensure your household receives the necessary amount of energy even when the weather doesn’t work in your favor. Moreover, in some countries, you can even be reimbursed if you manage to produce more energy than your household requires. So, what this basically means is that you can even earn money with your solar panel system instead of wasting it on energy bills. If you go the extra mile and invest in energy-efficient appliances – and cut your energy consumption even further – you’ll only stand to benefit from going solar.

These were just some of the ways you can make the best out of switching to solar energy and use your system to its fullest potential. Of course, you will be required to invest a hefty sum upfront in order to install such a system. But considering all the benefits, it’s safe to say that the switch will pay off immensely in the long run.
